Despite the weather, Bemidjians once again showed their loyalty to the music scene by coming out to hear two very fine concerts–The Parker Quartet and Timeless Tradtiions. Thursday evening (Jan. 21), the excitment in the air was palpable and seats were scarce in Thompson Recital Hall for the premiere performance the Parker Quartet in this area. The spontaneous eruption at the end of their concert with many whistles along with sustained applause prompted this young group of string musicians to play a short encore. It was truly a night to "be there" even when faced with an icy ride back home. Evan Hazard had the chance to sit and chat with Steve Starch, classical MPR host. "Timeless Traditions" also had a good audience despite the snowy weather on Sunday.
This Friday, we will have the chance to see and hear a truly world class ensemble, The Ahn Trio. There is so much to write about this group which has a national and international management group looking out for their interests. For a look at their work, just google Ahn Trio and you can see and hear some clips from other performances. Tickets will be available at the door for those who like to make up their mind at the last minute.
Next Saturday, Feb. 6 will be the third time that the Macalester College Pipe Band will make an appearance in Bemidji as part of their off-season concert tour. Off-season only means that on-season they are competing with other pipe bands in the U.S. and Canada and according the local businessman Brian Solum they do very well. Solum who claims to have "not a drop of Scottish blood" is a Grade l piper who goes to St. Paul every other week to practice with the group. This past fall, they appeared at the Walker Ethnic Fest which is where we happened to see them–actually we saw and heard them twice–they are that good. A rendition of "Scotland the Brave" brought the audience to their feet. Slocum started the now disbanded First City Pipe Band but continues to play at weddings, funerals, special events (the opening of the curling tournament now being held in Bemidji) and any other places he is asked to appear. He teaches piping to private students and has had up to 14 students at one time. To get a look at the band, check out their website www.macpipeband.com.
