some musing on this past weekend’s concerts, information on upcoming Pipe and Drum concert and updates to calendar

Despite the weather, Bemidjians once again showed their loyalty to the music scene by coming out to hear two very fine concerts–The Parker Quartet and Timeless Tradtiions. Thursday evening (Jan. 21), the excitment in the air was palpable and seats were scarce in Thompson Recital Hall for the premiere performance the Parker Quartet in this area. The spontaneous eruption at the end of their concert with many whistles along with sustained applause prompted this young group of string musicians to play a short encore. It was truly a night to "be there" even when faced with an icy ride back home. Evan Hazard had the chance to sit and chat with Steve Starch, classical MPR host.  "Timeless Traditions" also had a good audience despite the snowy weather on Sunday.

This Friday, we will have the chance to see and hear a truly world class ensemble, The Ahn Trio. There is so much to write about this group which has a national and international management group looking out for their interests. For a look at their work, just google Ahn Trio and you can see and hear some clips from other performances.  Tickets will be available at the door for those who like to make up their mind at the last minute.

Next Saturday, Feb. 6 will be the third time that the Macalester College Pipe Band will make an appearance in Bemidji as part of their off-season concert tour.  Off-season only means that on-season they are competing with other pipe bands in the U.S. and Canada and according the local businessman Brian Solum they do very well. Solum who claims to have "not a drop of Scottish blood" is a Grade l piper who goes to St. Paul every other week to practice with the group.  This past fall, they appeared at the Walker Ethnic Fest which is where we happened to see them–actually we saw and heard them twice–they are that good. A rendition of "Scotland the Brave" brought the audience to their feet. Slocum started the now disbanded First City Pipe Band but continues to play at weddings, funerals, special events (the opening of the curling tournament now being held in Bemidji) and any other places he is asked to appear.  He teaches piping to private students and has had up to 14 students at one time.  To get a look at the band, check out their website www.macpipeband.com.  More information will be posted here along with some pictures within the next few days.

more news that missed the column

Within the next few weeks, the Bemidji community will have an opportunity to see and hear groups in the superstar category in the world of music. the first such group is the Ahn Trio, a music trio of piano, cello and violin that bridges the gaps in music between classical, crossover, alternative, new wave, fusion, rock and a style of their own that defies definition. The sisters set as one of their goals the introduction of classical music to the general public or those who have never enjoyed it. It seems that they have been very successful in this goal as they have gained in popularity over the world and with diverse musical groups and vocalists. More information about what they are doing now can be accessed at their website www.AhnTrio.com.  For a sample of their style, there are YouTube videos as well. Their newest CD is "Lullaby For My Favorite Insomniac," their interpretation of a modern classical spin on music for 21st Century insomniacs.  Their performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Friday, January 29 at the Bemidji High School Auditorium. Tickets are a litte pricey for this area but very affordable compared to big city venues.  This concert is highly recommended.

Another group that will be coming to Bemidji next week is the Parker Quartet, their meteoric rise is due in no small part to their being selected as Minnesota Public Radio’s Artists in Residence with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. In addition to their concert on Thursday, Jan. 21, they have agreed to hold master classes for three young Bemidji musicians. Although not open to the public (at this time only their family and teachers may attend), Sarah Hamrin, 12 years old, will perform on the violin, Sadie Hamrin, a 9 year old will play Concerto #23 by Viatti and Eric Haugen, a junior at BHS who already studies with a cellist at the SPCO, is the third  young musician.

Steve Staruch, of MPR, will not only present the artists, he will talk about the works and what to listen for and then take questions from the audience for the players at the conclusion of their performance.  Wow! The intimate setting of Thompson Recital Hall is perfect for a chamber group so do not miss this chance to see a group that promises to meet the standards of world class groups like the Lindsay String Quartet (that is what my friend Evan Hazard promises).

Finally, I had the opportunity to hear a rehearsal for the upcoming Timeless Traditions concert: "In the Bleak Mid-Winter" scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 24 at the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts.  For this performance, they have added a member to the group, Edward Wharton, who is the new string instructor at Headwaters. Jon Romer and Jacque Tinsley are broadening the repretoire in adding this new "voice." There will be a feature article on this group in the coming weeks and this is another one of those times when local musicians will give a show on a professional level not always seen in towns as small and out of the way as Bemidji. This group is another gem in Bemidji’s music scene.

Edward Wharton, a guest artist who will perform with Timeless Traditions at the winter concert.

Jon Romer one of the founding members of Timeless Traditions playing the guitar–one normally sees him playing one of his many flutes seen resting on table in front of him.

Jacque Tinsley at her Irish harp.

Speaking of gems–while writing this blog I listened to a CD by The Bemidji Choir and Bemidji Chamber Singers–"Awakening" under the direction of Bradley Logan, director of BSU’s Music Department vocal ensemble. I have a collection of their CD’s dating back to November of 2000 when we saw our first Madrigal. We go every year and try to keep up our CD collection.  They are for sale at the Music Office in Bangsberg Hall and very affordable. This year I gave some as Christmas presents and they were much appreciated.  I will add more events to the calendar within a few days.
